 Background Checks Encouraged and TRBA Can Assist
 
In recent years churches have been encouraged to do background screenings on staff and volunteers – especially those working with children and youth. Tar River Baptist Association now does background checks on persons working with children and youth in our association and may implement a full policy regarding background checks for other volunteers and those going on mission trips in the name of Tar River in days to come.
 
The Association now has two sources from which to obtain background screenings and through our membership, we now can assist member churches in conducting background checks for a nominal fee (to enable us to recoup our expenses and maintain membership fees). We use PublicData.com and Protect My Ministry for our screening agencies. BSCNC, NAMB, and IMB use these services as well. Listed below is specific information regarding the types of screenings and cost involved. You may go to the Tar River website (release form) and download a release form (we must have the release form and any charges before a background check can be done. Here are the fees:
 
  • Simple Background and Sexual Predator Check (Public Data): $3.00 per search
  • Basic Background Check: Social Security Verification, Address History, National Criminal Search with re-verification of positive records, National Sex Registry Search (Protect My Ministry): $8.50
  • Plus Background Check (more detailed): Social Security Number Verification, Address History TRACE, National Criminal Search with re-verification of positive records, National Sex Registry Search, County or Statewide Court search: $17.00 plus any additional fees by the courts
  • Plus Background Check With Credit Report (All of the above plus credit report): $30.00 plus any court fees.
  • Recommended Options:
1.                  Driving history search for anyone responsible for vehicle use ($5.00 plus any court or state fees)
2.                  Credit history report for anyone entrusted with handling finances ($10.00)
3.                  Employment and/or degree verification ($8.00 for each position or school)
  • In addition to the above packages and recommendations, Protect My Ministry offers individual service offerings:
1.      SSN Verification and address history ($5.00)
2.      County criminal court search ($10.00 plus court fees)
3.      State criminal court search ($10.00 plus court fees)
4.      National Criminal Database search ($10.00)
5.      National Sex Offender Registry ($5.00 but if this is all you do, there are places that offer this search for free)
6.      DMV Records ($5.00 plus fees from states involved)
 
We must have the signed release form plus the check for the charges before we can run the Background Check. Make the check payable to Tar River Baptist Association and in the Memo section put "Background Checks".
